Suppression Lists

Suppression lists are used to suppress particular people from mailings to ensure that they do not get the email. This can be done in a number of ways in Email Manager. You can select to suppress normal recipient or smart lists or you can import suppression lists using the List Import Wizard, of which there are three types.

Note: The following screen is used to configure the list type on import. It is accessed from step two of the List Import wizard by clicking the button.

1. Suppression List

Normal suppression lists are simply a list of email addresses which can be used to suppress recipients from a mailing.

2. Domain Suppression List

A Domain Suppression List can be used to suppress all recipients in a list that share the same email domain - for example hotmail.com or acmecompany.com.

It is simply a list of the domains i.e. the text to the right of the '@' in an email address.

You can upload the list in the usual manner using the Import wizard.

Select Domain Suppression List, click Done and you will see that EM has automatically mapped the column name as Domain. No further configuration is necessary.

3. MD5 Suppression Lists

MD5 Suppression Lists are lists of email address which have been encrypted to the MD5 hash format. These can still be imported into EM and used as suppression lists. EM will do its own encryption of all email addresses in a recipient list and evaluate it against the suppression list. Any rows that match will be suppressed.

Recipient Preferences

These options allow the suppression list to be displayed in the recipient preference page, allowing them to opt in and out of the suppression list.

Note: We strongly recommend customers use the preferences functionality to manage preferences for recipients. Using both preferences and list opt in opt out may confuse customers and increase the chances or incorrect mailings.
